Questions to Validate:

What exactly do you want to achieve?

Is the objective described with action verbs?

Goal statement must clearly explain: ▪ What ▪ Why ▪ How ▪ When

Will this objective lead to the desired results?

Is it clear who is involved?

Is it clear when this will happen?

Is it clear what needs to happen?

Statements must call to action. Use strong action verbs to better communicate the intent of what is to be attempted (for example: increase, plan, write, conduct, etc.)

Is the outcome clear?

Examples:

Avoid generalities and infinitives. (for example: to understand, to know, etc.)

Reduce Joe’s novice ratings below 15% within the next 3 weeks. Joe is currently at 23%.

Always use a POSITIVE approach for your goals – Focus on IMPROVING.

To achieve improvements in competency scores above current levels.
